Lend Lease has been announced as Principal Sponsor for Open-City's Summer Architecture Academy at the University of Westminster, which takes place on 2 - 5 August. The Happold Trust is Engineering Day Sponsor. This four-day programme enables young people aged 12-18 to explore the built environment through a unique multi-disciplinary approach to understanding architecture, sustainability and urban design.
Over four days participants will get stuck into creative workshops investigating how their city is designed and built, working with built environment professionals and students, and Open-City's expert team of educators. One of the main aims of the programme is to give participants an insight into career opportunities in the various built environment disciplines of which they might never be aware - and direct access to building design professionals.
Participants will be set a design challenge: to create a massive 3D model of their designs for a new urban quarter, in the Ambika P3 space at University of Westminster’s Architecture School, testing out life-size structures, model-making techniques and mapping along the way - in other words, following the same process much as a building is considered by a design team in the 'real world'.
The programme will culminate in an awards reception and private view, with a public exhibition of the model and participants' work on Friday 6 August and from Monday 9 August to Wednesday 11 August from 1pm to 4pm.
The Academy is also in partnership with the University of Westminster and supported by Arts Council England, 4D Modelshop and Edding.
Nick Forwood, Head of New Business, Lend Lease, said:
“Young people taking part will have four, hands-on taster days exploring
and designing buildings, improving their spatial skills with sketching
and model-making skills. They will be assisted by design professionals
throughout the week, to ask questions and receive guidance. We need
to attract more and talented young people into the design and construction
industry. Open-City offers this opportunity for the next generation
to find out more about what defines the space we live, work and play
in.”
Victoria Thornton, Director of Open-City, said:
“The Summer Architecture Academy offers young Londoners a creative workshop
that replicates the real world scenario of building design, bringing
together all the disciplines engaged in the design of the built environment
through site investigations and design challenges. As a result the
academy will inspire young Londoners that don’t normally have these
opportunities, to become more aware of potential further education
and career paths in the the property and construction industry."
